WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COUNTRY SO FAR? I have been asked this question many times and I always give the same answer - I don’t have favorite country, but I have favorite places where I had good time with nice people I met.
WHAT PLACE IS TOP OF YOUR BUCKET LIST? Long time ago I saw a picture of Angel Falls in Venezuela. It’s just amazing and breathtaking. I would like to visit that place one day.
WHAT CAN'T YOU TRAVEL WITHOUT? The only two things I need is my passport and a debit card. Everything else I can buy on the road :) Now to be more serious :) I always bring earphones to listen music when I want to relax.
DO YOU PREFER SOLO TRAVEL OR WITH SOMEONE ELSE? Usually I travel alone because I am more flexible, I can change plans, go wherever I want, stay as long as I want. Few times I traveled with some friends for the short trips. Also, the main reason I travel alone is that I can’t find someone with similar plans for the trip, similar desires what to see, what to do. For me is more relaxing just to hit the road wherever and whenever I feel like to.
WHO IS THE PERSON AT HOME THAT YOU MISS THE MOST? It’s not only one person but all my friends and family back at home, all the atmosphere I got used to enjoy in my city. WHICH COUNTRY THE MOST FRIENDLIES PEOPLE? I was really surprised by welcomes of people in Myanmar. They accepted me very well, helped me when I needed help with an open heart, not asking for anything in exchange. In Russia I feel like at home because Serbian and Russian mentality is quiet similar. They are also warm welcoming like people in Serbia. Always offer you a tea, food...
WHO IS THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON YOU'VE MET SO FAR? Can’t really choose one person as I met many travelers and locals on the road but all of them left some mark on my personality and my life. WHAT'S BEEN YOUR SCARIEST MOMENT? So far nothing bad happened, but once in Cambodia I got a bit scared while traveling by minivan. I was with 8 other girls in a van, didn’t know them from before. They loaded passengers and took us to some dark neighborhood of a small city who knows where in Cambodia. They told us to go out of the van. It was pitch black night and one strong light pointing on us. My first thought was, they are gonna sell them as slaves and as I am a guy, they will probably sell my organs :) What actually happened, they loaded a full van of vegetables, drove us on the other part of the city, unloaded vegetables and continued driving us to our destination.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? I did so many stupid things in my life. I think I crossed the border when something can be embarrassing for me :) I am not sure this is good, but that’s me :)
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST USEFUL ITEM YOU'VE BROUGHT? My phone, which I actually didn’t buy, but found on the street during my trip. I was preparing to buy one, but finding this one was like a gift. Since then, it really helped me during my trips, saved my time while searching for some places and helped me to solve many problems in various situations.
WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE YOU'VE RECEIVED? Before I started to travel, I hosted many travelers at my place, heard many stories, got many advices. Here, I would like to give a valuable advice I learnt on the road. When you travel and something is not going like you planned to go, don’t get upset and panic. Instead to relax, take it easy and things will come to the right place. Don’t want to get upset about anything. At the end, everything ends well, most of the time, even better than I planned.
WHAT'S THE LONGEST YOU'VE BEEN AWAY FROM HOME? 6 months, but until the end of this trip it will be total 10 months.
WHAT'S YOUR DREAM JOB? Buy 5 apartments, rent them and never work again :) The only thing I need is money to buy 5 apartments :) If we are talking about real job, I like video editing and recording any kind of movies. For me, any job in film industry would be good, just to be involved in creating something. WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO LIVE IN THE WORLD? As more I travel, as more I want to live in my home town. It’s big enough to have many things to do, many people so you don’t get bored of seeing same faces every day. You can go anywhere inside the city by walking, no wasting time in traffic jams, not so much noise, relaxing people, many parks, a nice river, mountains all around the city, beautiful nature... I know that many people want to find a better place to live, but I already live in a nice city. The name is Nish and it’s located in Serbia. Spelling in Serbian language would be Niš. You are welcome to stop by.
NAME THE COUNTRIES YOU HAVE VISITED. Albania, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia andHerzegovina, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China,Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy,Kosovo, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macao, Macedonia, Malaysia, Maldives, Monaco, Mongolia, Montenegro, Myanmar, Netherlands, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United States, Vatican, Vietnam
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TRAVEL MEMORY? I was 7 and my family together with my closest relatives was in Bulgarian seaside. As kids we had so much fun. I also had my first ferry ride. Later when I grew up, I came back to the same place, but couldn’t recognize anything :)
WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU'VE LEARNED? Most of the people I talk with about traveling are afraid that someone is going kill them in a foreign country, that something bad will happen for sure if they leave their country. I realized, wherever you go, you will find friendly people as long as you are friendly to them. You will always find scum taxi drivers everywhere in the world, even in your own country, but sometimes, nice taxi drivers will give you a ride for free when you are in need. So far, the most friendliest people I met are in Southeast Asia.
IF YOU WROTE A NOVEL, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT? If you mean a novel about traveling, I really don’t know. My adventures are interesting to me, I am not sure they would be interesting to someone else also. According to my friends’ response on my Facebook travel status, they like what I do. Small problem, I don’t know how to write an interesting travel book :) Maybe something like a diary would fit more to my writing style.
WHAT TRAVEL SCAMS HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT? Tea scum in China. It will happen probably only at main tourist attractions and areas. Some girl will approach to you wanting to meet you. She will talk with you for about 1-2 minutes and propose to go for a tea in a tea shop. That happened to me 3 times. I refused all of them. First time I didn’t know what is it about but I was in hurry, other two times I already informed myself about that scum over the internet. After you accept to go for a tea, the girl will bring you to the shop she has a deal with. Tea will be unlimited and only 50 Yuan (~8$). But later when they bring you the bill, it could be more than 200$. While you are struggling with the owner to explain that the price should be 50 Yuan, the girl will be gone and you will be left alone to deal with big security guys. Google it and you will find many examples.
Another scum I know about is in Bangkok, also main tourist areas. Some people will approach you telling you that they work as engineers, for military or some nice job that makes them looking trustworthy. They will try to put you in a tuk tuk of their friend who will show you many tourist areas only for 20 baht (less than 1$). If you accept, they will take you to some worthless places and to the tailor’s shop. The idea is that you buy a 100-150$ suit and they get a coupon for 5 liters of free gas. They almost scummed me, but at the end, I scummed them. I didn’t pay them when I saw what is happening, but I got a ride around some places for free. Pity, not such good places to see.
Basically wherever I go, especially tourist areas, someone try to scum me. This is the way how to get rid off them. If they approach you just like that and offer to do something for you, no matter what is it, it’s probably a scum. No locals will go to tourist area and ask foreigners to help them just like that but if you ask locals for help, they will help you for sure. Try to see a difference.
DO YOU CALL YOURSELF A TOURIST OR A TRAVELLER? A traveler. After visiting 45 countries and hitchhiking in 30 of them, I can’t ever be a tourist.
STRICT SCHEDULE OR GO WITH THE FLOW? During my first trips I had a plan where and when to. Also, I was time limited for those trips, but as more I traveled, I started to be more and more flexible. Now I am on a trip that I don’t have any specific date of coming back home neither any specific direction of traveling. Few times I changed a plan not about visiting this or that city, but either to visit Japan and Korea, or Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. At the end, I added Vietnam on the list but had to leave Japan and Korea for the next time. Also, at the beginning of the trip, plan was to go 2 months in Indonesia then China, at the end, I stayed 4 months in Indonesia, didn’t go to China, but went to Myanmar and Thailand. Maybe this is the alternative answer why I like to travel alone. Nobody can handle a person who changes plans so quickly.
WHAT'S BEEN THE BEST STREET FOOD YOU'VE HAD? I like Asian street food, but my favorite dish is Turkish Donner or Kebab or Gyros. Many names for basically the same thing. I think I could eat that all the time.
WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU'VE DONE? If you think about traveling, then traveling by land through Ukraine, Russia and Mongolia to China, Macau and Hong Kong and flying to Sri Lanka. I started trip without any plan and didn’t have idea how to get there, what to expect on the road and how I am gonna come back. Now, I do this all the time, but in 2012. it was first time for me.
DO YOU THINK YOU'LL STAY FRIENDS WITH THE PEOPLE YOU'VE MET? Yes, I stay in contact with people I met on the road. As I met many people, I can’t talk with all of them all the time, but from time to time, I like to see what they are doing now, where are they and maybe, if they are on my way, to meet again. Also, it depends on people. If we made a connection, we will stay in contact, if not, probably that’s it. We will remain friends on Facebook but not really true friends in real life.
WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING ANIMAL YOU'VE SEEN? Myself in the mirror when I don’t do haircut for 2 months and don’t shave for 10 days :)
WHO IS YOUR DREAM TRAVEL COMPANION? Usually my girlfriend, whoever she is. I carefully choose girlfriends according to their travel experience :)
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM TRAVELING EXPERIENCE. I wish I can travel by my own car (or minivan) one day and visit all those places I missed while hitchhiking. Sleep in a minivan or camping next to it, not be dependent on couch-surfing hosts, guest houses or whatever. Driving through the nature and if I see something I like, just park there and stay as long as I want.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS? Adventurous, cheerful, funny.
WHAT CAN YOU ADVICE TO PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO START TRAVELING? Every first step could be hard. I started traveling around nearby countries. Then next time I went further and further and further. You don’t have to go 10.000 km to travel, start with your country, then neighbor countries, go see what you can find there, then go to another one, get some experience, see what you like when you travel, what you dislike. Don’t pack too much stuff. More you pack, more you will hate yourself later. 60 liters backpack is all what I need (approx. 10 kilos). Most of the time it’s not even full. Pack your bag and hit the road and you will have the best time of your life. www.facebook.com/NixyJungle https://twitter.com/nixyjungle https://instagram.com/nixyjungle/ http://www.nixyjungle.com/
